Expected Statistics: xBA, xSLG and xwOBA

Statcast expected statistics compare a batted ball with contact that had similar exit velocity and launch angle. Sprint Speed enters some hit-probability calculations. The public Baseball Savant expected-statistics leaderboard lets you change the date range and minimum sample.

Expected batting average is easiest to connect with hits. xSLG gives more weight to damaging contact, which makes it useful for total bases and extra-base-hit research. xwOBA is broader: it weights different ways of reaching base and summarizes overall offensive quality.

A gap between actual and expected results is a reason to investigate. It is not proof that the next result must reverse. Defense, park, speed, spray angle, health and ordinary variance can all contribute.

Strikeout Metrics: K%, K/9 and SwStr%

Strikeout rate uses plate appearances or batters faced as the denominator. K/9 uses innings. K% often describes a pitcher’s chance of striking out each hitter more cleanly, while K/9 is an intuitive innings-based rate. Swinging-strike rate, usually SwStr%, records misses per pitch and helps show whether the strikeout skill has support underneath the final outcomes.

For a pitcher strikeout prop, combine the pitcher’s rates with the confirmed opponent lineup, handedness, pitch mix, expected batters faced and pitch count. A high K% cannot overcome a short outing if the posted line assumes six innings.

Contact Quality: Barrels and Hard-Hit Rate

MLB defines a hard-hit ball as one struck at 95 mph or more. A barrel is a narrower combination of exit velocity and launch angle associated with strong extra-base production. Both can help distinguish a hitter producing authoritative contact from one surviving on weak singles.

Use contact quality with opportunity. A hitter can own excellent barrel numbers but receive only three plate appearances from the bottom of the order. For total bases props, also check pitcher repertoire, park dimensions, wind and the market price.

Pitcher Run Prevention: ERA, FIP and WHIP

ERA records earned runs allowed per nine innings. FIP narrows the inputs to outcomes a pitcher controls more directly: strikeouts, walks, hit batters and home runs. WHIP counts walks and hits per inning. These metrics answer different questions, so a bettor should not choose whichever number supports the preferred side.

For a single-game prop, workload and matchup remain central. Hits allowed depends on official scoring and opponent contact. Outs recorded depend on efficiency and the manager’s hook. Earned runs can be volatile because sequencing determines whether baserunners score.

BABIP and Regression

BABIP measures batting average on balls in play, excluding home runs and strikeouts from the ball-in-play sample. An unusually high or low BABIP can flag results worth reviewing, but it does not carry one universal normal value for every player. Speed, contact profile, defense and park can support persistent differences.

Regression is not a date on the calendar. A hitter running above his underlying profile is not guaranteed to go hitless tonight, and a pitcher with poor recent luck is not guaranteed a clean start.

How To Apply Advanced Stats To A Prop

  1. Start with the market definition: hits, total bases, strikeouts, walks, outs or runs.
  2. Choose metrics that describe that outcome rather than broad reputation.
  3. Use a sample large enough to be useful, then check recent role or pitch-mix changes.
  4. Confirm the lineup, starter, weather, park and expected workload.
  5. Compare the exact line and price across books through the odds-shopping workflow.
  6. Pass when a lineup, workload or price assumption is unresolved.
