How to read a college football total
A total is a price on possessions multiplied by points per possession. Most people handicap the second half of that sentence and ignore the first, which is backwards.
Expected total ≈ (possessions per team × 2) × points per possession
A typical FBS game runs 11 to 13 possessions per side. Two fast offenses can push that to 15; two ball-control teams can drag it to 9. That swing of six possessions per side, at roughly 2.0 points per possession, is worth about twelve points of total — larger than almost any edge you will find in scoring quality. NFL possession counts cluster tightly. College possession counts do not, and that single fact is why tempo is the first input on a college total and roughly the fourth on an NFL one.

Why early-season college odds are the softest — and the riskiest
In Week 0 and Week 1 the market is pricing on last year’s personnel and this year’s assumptions. Portal turnover, new coordinators and unproven quarterbacks mean nobody — model or book — has current-season data. That creates genuine mispricing, and it also means confidence should be lower, not higher.
